I have versions of Morte that go back to waay pre-release, and I don't really have any idea of what version I currently have installed. What's the best way to update?

If it's the pre-bsa version, dismiss him, make a save, remove him, make another save, delete all of his loose files and then install the new esp and bsa. Otherwise just overwrite the esp and bsa files.

I have a new character (after my "resurrect character"experience, so I haven't met Morte yet at this point.

Ah, okay. Just delete any loose files and install the esp and bsa then. I'll be releasing an update soon, but all you should have to do is overwrite those two files when it's ready.
