To myspace or not to myspace?

Postby Elaura » Fri Jun 07, 2013 6:27 pm

I've had a myspace account since before it lost its shine and its marketshare to facebook. I just got a friend request, which reminded me of it and that I need to log back in to check my security settings and change my password. I like to do thins every now and then because I just don't want anyone else to get it and pretend to be me, even though I'm not actively using it.

I had a decent blog there, which I planned to move here anyway. I lost all of my customizations in the last upgrade, too. The question is, should I just delete everything and close it down or keep it for posterity?

I recommend closing it.
Why? I like big ones, that's why.

Yeah Elaura I would close it.
If you don't use it any more what is the point in having it there.
It is a security risk, and many many of the Myspace profiles have been inundated with viruses.
The site is just not safe any more.

I would close it. But then I am a link o phobe. Facebook has been sending my mom and me stuff for years trying to get us onto their site. False emails saying my stepdad had invited me.. Falsely saying to my mom that I had invited her. I finally blocked them from emailing me at all.

1.-They are false because none of the group of us are even members...

I just delete those without opening. Sometimes opening an email is all you need to do to get the virus that is in it.
I am but a fragment cast apart from the whole.
A bit of flotsam to cling to in the storm.

I am a fly in the ointment, I am a whisper in the shadows.
I am also an old old woman. More than that you need not know.

Yeah, I delete all facebook emails, too. I'm not a member and Jac's profile was for business only and he hasn't had any business in over a year.

I hear you all and I am strongly considering heeding your advice. Myspace even has a link that allows you to get out without leaving anything behind, which a lot of social networking sites don't.

I have to admit, I'm still irrationally reluctant. I checked it out and was actually considering using it again, because I have contacts there that I don't have anywhere else. I guess I'll have to go through that list and see if any of them are still logging in and if maybe they have alternate points of contact on their profiles.

Fortunately, my profile was clean and I was able to re-design it fairly easily. With Opera's adblocker, I didn't even see any of the ads. It's a shame people got away from myspace, really. It's much cleaner and easier to use than Facebook (at least to me).

I'm not very knowledgeable about social media, but isn't Tumblr more of a substitute for Myspace than Facebook is?

I don't even know what Tumblr is. Is it like Livejournal?

Kinda like that, I think. It's basically a blog website. Here's an example: link

Ah. No, myspace is actually a social networking site that has a blog feature. It seems to me to be more akin to FB.

I use Facebook only because most of my far-flung children use it. I gotta keep track of them somehow, eh? :)

Anyway, I used to frequent a site where I was an occasional (but frequent) guest blogger. When that site vanished away (due to frequent DOS attacks, and horrendous spamming) I lost everything I had there. Old blogs, contacts, but worst of all, I lost the references I had used, and that has been a major pain every since. The worst of it is that is the second time that happened to me...
